Handovers Nobody Recorded
Inghams ran breakdowns and repairs through Maximo, when anyone entered them at all. Between shifts, there was often nothing to hand over.

Handovers weren't recorded
Asked how they worked before Workex, the Shift Leader said: "You didn't record it."
Nobody knew where the job was up to
"You're scratching your head wondering where they're up to. You're only guessing."
The system was in the wrong place
The computer is in the workshop, not at the machine. "Generally, there are no photos."

How Workex got in the door
Nobody pitched it. An employee spotted Workex on the number plate of Ian's car and asked what it was. Word travelled from there, and four people told Adam, the Engineering Manager, before Ian had given a demo.
"Just Workex It."
Take Photos
Take photos like you always do, documenting the job as you go.

How were breakdowns, repairs and handovers recorded before Workex?
"Sometimes Maximo. Handovers, you didn't record it. You're scratching your head wondering where they're up to. Not knowing what's been done. You're only guessing."
Has Workex saved you time?
"Workex is 50% quicker, easily. Take a photo, send a voice note, send it. It's not 400 clicks with the mouse, going through different pages. It's just bang, bang, bang."
Has it helped you understand a job faster?
"The Base Room brine pump. The opposite shift sent me a photo to show me what was wrong with it."
Do photos make the problem easier to understand?
"Yes. You're not looking around trying to find the problem after someone's told you about it. You've got a photo in front of you. It's especially helpful when it's been circled and highlighted."
Have you used information another tradesperson captured?
"A colleague took photos of a sprocket on the incline conveyor for the Roto box. He supplied the sprocket number and size. That was much easier than trying to find the right sprocket when the machine was down."
Has it improved shift handovers and communication?
"Yes. You know what's been done and what still needs to be done. With chat, if you forget something, you can jump in and send it straight through."
Does making reporting easier mean you record more?
"If it's a complicated process, you get lazy and you don't bother. With Workex it's in your face. It just makes it easy."
Could the information help reduce future downtime?
"Yes. If the same problem comes up again, you know how it was fixed last time. You can also see how long it is between breakdowns, then reduce that with preventative maintenance. Fix it before it breaks."
What would happen if Workex was removed tomorrow?
"We'd just go back to the way it was. A clunky system that no one wants to use. The computer is in the workshop, and it's hard to find information on Maximo. Generally, there are no photos."
Is it worth paying for?
"It's easy for the blokes to use. They can communicate amongst themselves on specific jobs and tasks. It'll save money in the long run."
Experienced Trades Adopt Tools That Respect Their Time
The common assumption is that experienced tradespeople resist new technology. At Inghams a 14-year fitter called Workex "easily" 50% quicker. They didn't need convincing, because it took fewer steps than what they had.
Parts, ready before the shutdown
A photo of the sprocket, with its number and size, meant the right part was waiting when the machine went down.
Repeat faults solved faster
Past fixes are on record, so the same fault doesn't start from scratch.
Fix it before it breaks
Seeing the gap between breakdowns turns reactive maintenance into preventative.
Proven on the Floor
The afternoon shift adopted Workex without a push, and the Reliability Manager, who didn't want another system, asked for an IBM Maximo integration.
Adoption came from the workforce, not a mandate.
Experienced trades embraced it without being pushed.
